Poem

Love and Fear

This poem compares and contrasts the Love of God and the Fear of God. Some preachers emphasize the Love of God alone while some preach about Fear of God alone! But we need both – we cannot neglect one and embrace the other: Embracing Love of God without Fear of God is hypocrisy. Embracing Fear of God without Love of God is spiritual poverty.

Lord I’m terribly afraid
when You search my heart:
I feel more like Peter, who said,
“Lord, I’m a sinner! From me, depart !”

There Thou art! Infinitely pure
And here I am, filthy as a pig !
I cannot stand before Thee for sure –
Who will bridge this gap so big?

I desperately need thy joyful presence –
But I’m afraid of Thee O Great I AM !
My wickedness I see and thy Holiness I sense;
How may I dare approach Thee as I am ?

O but with Thee, there is mercy;
Therefore I approach Thy mighty Throne.
You understand my weaknesses and see me
Through Christ’s eyes – as Your precious own !

Fear is swallowed up by Thy Love for me –
And now, with more reverence, I draw near:
Fear of Thee abides still, for, I see
that to shun evil, Thy wrath, I must fear !

But Oh ! How great the Peace and comfort !
I cannot find words to express Thy Grace –
Thy Promise that Thou shalt never desert !
May I always dwell close to Thee, seeking Thy Face !
